Residence card renewal — when and how to apply

A residence card isn't formally extended — you apply for the next permit. The key rule: apply no later than the last day of your legal stay. Then you can stay in Poland until the decision.

It's a new application, not an extension

Each new permit is a separate case with a full set of documents and fees. The basis can be the same (e.g. work) or different (e.g. moving from work to business). You file in MOS, just like the first time.

When to apply

No later than the last day of your current card or other legal stay. Earlier is better: documents, Annex 1 from your employer and signatures take time. An application filed late doesn't give you legal stay during the case.

What confirms legal stay after filing

Since 27 April 2026 — the MOS filing certificate (zaświadczenie) instead of a passport stamp. It confirms legal stay in Poland but doesn't let you travel in Schengen.

Fees for the next permit

The same as the first time: work 440 zł, studies, family and business 340 zł, card 100 zł. Since 5 March 2026 the fee isn't refunded if refused, so file a complete set.

Common renewal mistakes

  • filing at the last minute without a complete set,
  • an old Annex 1 or data that differs from the new contract,
  • a gap in insurance,
  • no income documents for a family or business basis.

Time for permanent residence?

If you've lived in Poland legally for several years, check whether you qualify for permanent residence or EU long-term resident status (usually after 5 years). No more yearly applications.

Renewing a work permit: what to watch

If you still work for the same employer, you need a new Annex 1 signed electronically. If you changed jobs while your card was valid, make sure the permit change was completed — otherwise the next application may have a weak basis.

Renewing for studies or family

Students need a current university certificate and proof of funds. For family reunification, the office checks the current income and housing of the family member in Poland. A family card is usually no longer than the card of the person you joined.

A plan for 2 months before your card expires

  • check your card's expiry date,
  • collect current documents for your basis,
  • ask your employer for Annex 1,
  • pay the application and card fees,
  • file in MOS with time to spare.
